A breast augmentation is a significant step, and one that deserves careful preparation. So that you can look forward to your procedure feeling safe and at ease, it is important to address every open question early and take the right steps before surgery.

From choosing the right anaesthesia method to preparing your documents and your mental outlook, we at BRST guide you comprehensively, step by step. In this article, you will find everything worth knowing about the optimal preparation for breast surgery, so that you can go into your treatment with a confident, reassured feeling.

What is discussed during the consultation?

The consultation is the first, and one of the most important steps on your path toward breast augmentation. During this appointment, our specialists take the time needed to discuss your wishes, concerns, and individual anatomical circumstances.

These are the topics we focus on:

Your expectations and wishes: What implant size and shape do you have in mind? You can also find out more in our blog article: Breast implants: Which size and shape suit you best?

  • Your anatomy and feasibility: We assess your breast anatomy, skin elasticity, and proportions to plan a realistic, harmonious result.
  • Surgical methods: We discuss which technique - whether Mia Femtech™, Motiva Preservé™, or Motiva JOY.(dot)® - best suits you and your desired results.
  • Safety and risks: You will learn which anaesthesia method is right for you and what precautions are taken to minimise risk.
  • Aftercare: A smooth healing process is already planned during the consultation, so you know exactly what to look out for after surgery. Read more in our article: Aftercare and healing process after breast surgery

Do you have doubts or questions? Be sure to raise them. Good preparation begins with complete clarity. The BRST team is available to you at any time.

Checklist: What questions should I ask during the consultation?

The consultation gives you the opportunity to clear up any uncertainties. Be sure to ask these questions:

  • What implant size and shape would you recommend for me, and why?
  • What preparations are necessary for the procedure to go smoothly?
  • How does the chosen anaesthesia method work, and what risks are involved?
  • What aftercare is required, and how long does the healing process take?
  • Am I a suitable candidate for a minimally invasive method like Mia Femtech™?
  • What can I do to minimise the risk of complications?
  • Is comprehensive insurance coverage in place during and after the procedure?

Tip: Bring this checklist with you to your consultation. This way, you can be sure no important questions are overlooked.

What documents are needed before surgery?

For your surgery to go smoothly, a number of documents and medical records are required. You should bring these along at the latest at your final pre-operative appointment:

  • Current medication list: All medications you are taking should be listed, including dosage.
  • Allergy record: If known, make sure information about allergies (e.g. to medications) is fully documented.
  • Surgical reports from previous procedures: Especially important if you have already had breast surgery.
  • Health documents: Blood test results, an ECG (if required), or medical reports on any existing conditions.

What do I need to know about anaesthesia?

Anaesthesia is a central concern for many patients considering a breast augmentation. At BRST, we explain the various anaesthesia options in detail and tailor them to you individually:

  • Twilight sedation: Commonly used for minimally invasive methods such as Mia Femtech™ or Motiva Preservé™.
  • General anaesthesia: Mainly used for more extensive procedures such as the Motiva JOY.(dot)® method. Modern technology considerably reduces the associated risks.
  • Local anaesthesia: Possible for less invasive procedures (such as Mia Femtech™ or Motiva Preservé™), often combined with twilight sedation to increase comfort.

Throughout the entire procedure, an experienced anaesthesiology specialist is by your side to ensure safety and control.

Which medications should be discontinued before breast surgery?

Certain medications can affect the healing process or the safety of your surgery. These should therefore be discontinued in good time, but always discuss this with your treating doctor first. The following medications may be affected:

  • Blood thinners: These can increase the risk of bleeding and should generally be discontinued 10-14 days before surgery.
  • Herbal supplements: Preparations such as ginkgo biloba, high-dose vitamin E, or garlic can also affect blood clotting. The same applies to St. John's wort, ginseng, and green tea.
  • Hormonal medications: Also ask your doctor whether medications such as the contraceptive pill should be paused.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our team at any time.

Physical preparation for breast surgery

Pay attention to your body. Being in good physical condition can have a positive effect on both the course of your surgery and your recovery. The following aspects are important:

Quitting smoking: How does smoking affect wound healing?

Smoking has a negative effect on blood circulation and can considerably impair wound healing. It increases the risk of wound infections, scarring, delayed healing, and tissue necrosis. We strongly recommend abstaining completely from nicotine for at least four weeks before and after surgery to support the healing process.

The optimal diet before breast surgery

A healthy diet prepares your body optimally for your breast surgery.

  • Choose easily digestible foods such as vegetables, rice, or quinoa, so as not to place unnecessary strain on your body.
  • A protein-rich diet such as legumes, fish, and lean meat supports wound healing and muscle build-up.
  • Whole grain products and nuts contain zinc and can help strengthen the immune system.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine for at least one week before surgery. You should also remove heavy, fatty, or very salty foods from your diet beforehand.

Exercise before surgery: What is allowed?

Regular exercise in the form of endurance training strengthens the circulatory system and supports blood flow - both important factors for optimal preparation and recovery. Light strength training can also be helpful: stronger arm and back muscles can improve your postoperative mobility.

However: avoid intensive training (e.g. strength training or cardio exercises) starting about 7 days before surgery. Light stretching or walks are still allowed and beneficial.

Going into breast surgery relaxed: tips for mental preparation

A positive mental outlook can make the entire surgical process easier. Consciously acknowledge your fears, talk about them, and plan relaxing rituals into the days before your procedure.

Helpful points for mental preparation:

  • Relaxation exercises to reduce anxiety
  • Open conversations with our team to talk through any uncertainties
  • Enough sleep to support your body's recovery

Visualise how you will feel after surgery with your new breast - this can have a motivating and calming effect.

How can loved ones help with preparation for breast surgery?

Support from family or friends considerably eases the time before breast surgery, as well as the weeks that follow. Ask someone you trust to accompany you on the day of surgery and to support you during the first days afterwards. Small gestures, such as preparing meals or taking over everyday tasks, can also be an enormous help.

Checklist: The last day before your breast surgery

On the last day before your breast surgery, keep the following points in mind:

  • Drink enough water or tea.
  • Eat a healthy diet.
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight.
  • Remove nail polish and take a shower.
  • Make sure everything is organised for the time after surgery, starting with your return trip from the clinic.
  • Have any last questions? Discuss them with your doctor.
  • Remove any jewellery and piercings.
  • Replace contact lenses with glasses.
  • Pack your clinic bag and remember your ID and insurance card, toiletries, and comfortable clothing.
  • Go to bed early.
