Correcting Breast Malformations: What Modern Treatment Options Are Available?
Book an Appointment
Perhaps this thought has been on your mind for a while: your breasts don't look the way you'd like them to - perhaps because of an unusual shape or noticeable asymmetry. Your breasts may have developed differently during puberty or another formative stage of life. You're not alone in this: breast malformations are not uncommon, and they deserve to be named without shame or self-doubt.
What matters: today there are safe, modern, and individually tailored ways to correct your breasts - with an eye to natural appearance, symmetry, and a result that feels right for you.
At BRST in Zurich, you're in experienced hands: we take how you see yourself and your concerns seriously, provide medically sound guidance, and plan a solution that fits your body and your everyday life together with you.
What are breast malformations?
Breast malformations are congenital, or less commonly acquired, deviations in breast development, shape, or position. They differ clearly from the normal anatomical variation found in almost every woman. While slight differences in size, shape, or nipple height are considered natural, we speak of malformations requiring treatment when the deviation is pronounced and leads to functional limitations, ongoing insecurity, or psychological distress.
Malformations often become apparent during puberty, as the breast develops. In some patients, however, these characteristics only become noticeable later - for example after changes in weight, pregnancy and breastfeeding, or previous surgery.
What types of breast malformations are there?
Breast malformations present in different ways. Below is an overview.
Breast asymmetry
Differences in size, shape, or position between the breasts are among the most common breast malformations. For those affected, the distress often comes from clothing that doesn't sit evenly, a bra that's difficult to fit, or a visible difference in nipple height. To find out how to recognise asymmetry, what causes it, and which corrections make sense, read our article: Breast Asymmetry - When Breasts Are Different Sizes
Tubular breast
A tubular breast is a congenital developmental anomaly with typical features: a narrow breast base, a volume deficit particularly in the lower part of the breast, and puffy or enlarged areolas. Many of those affected experience significant psychological distress.
As a US study shows, tubular breasts can usually be reliably corrected in a single procedure with a clear classification and a suitably chosen technique, with overall low complication rates and stable, natural results.
Inverted nipples
With inverted nipples, the nipples are drawn inward on one or both sides. Besides how they look, functional aspects can also play a role, such as impaired ability to breastfeed or recurring irritation. Several correction options are available, including gentle techniques designed to preserve sensitivity. We're happy to advise you personally on the options that suit you.
Symmastia
With symmastia, the natural separation between the breasts along the midline is missing; visually, the décolletage appears to merge into one. Correction is demanding and should be carried out by experienced specialists. In a personal consultation, we'll explain the approach and the results you can expect.
Polymastia
Polymastia describes additional breast tissue or ectopic mammary gland tissue - often in the armpit area. This can cause both aesthetic and functional discomfort, such as pressure, friction, or a bothersome sense of extra volume. Depending on the findings, tissue removal and shape harmonisation may be an option to improve contour and comfort. We'll work out with you which method makes sense.
Congenital breast malformations
This umbrella term covers rarer developmental disorders, which can also include combinations of several malformations. Treatment depends on the individual pattern and requires careful planning.
When does correcting a breast malformation make sense?
Correcting a breast malformation makes sense when you personally feel burdened by it - regardless of how “significant” the deviation looks from the outside. Many patients describe
- everyday situations that feel unsettling,
- limitations when it comes to clothing or sport, and
- reduced self-esteem.
What matters is whether you want a change, and whether it's medically sensible, safe, and realistically achievable. During your consultation, we weigh up the benefits, expectations, and possible alternatives together.
Modern treatment options for breast malformations at BRST
At the centre of every treatment is an individual surgical concept - never a one-size-fits-all solution. Depending on your starting point, different techniques from breast augmentation, breast reduction, and breast lift can be combined to bring shape, volume, and position into harmony. We use both implant-based and tissue-based techniques, precisely matched to your anatomy.
- For tissue-preserving augmentations, we use modern methods such as Motiva Preservé™, with a small incision and fast recovery.
- Where suitable, minimally invasive approaches such as Mia Femtech™ are an option, for example when a subtle volume correction with the least noticeable scarring possible is desired.
- For larger reconstructions of shape, we use ergonomic implants and structuring techniques applied to the breast tissue; reductions and lifts are carried out so that the natural breast shape is reconstructed and nipple height is brought into harmony.
The goal is always a natural-looking result with a stable shape for many years to come - looking right both at rest and in motion, without overcorrection.
Why BRST specialises in breast malformations
At BRST, we specialise in breast surgery. This focus gives us extensive treatment experience - even in complex cases and secondary corrections following previous surgery. Surgical planning is carried out by specialist surgeons who use modern measurement and visualisation methods and take every detail into account - from tissue quality to the desired scar placement. High safety and quality standards, a tissue-preserving surgical approach, and close aftercare form the basis for dependable results.
Consultation and individual planning
A good decision starts with a thorough specialist consultation - at BRST, in person with Dr. med Martina Schneider and PD Dr. med. Farid Rezaeian. We assess your anatomy, skin and tissue quality, and any symmetries or asymmetries. We then discuss your expectations around shape, volume, and feel. On this basis, we develop a realistic target outcome together with you.
In the next step, we compare sensible approaches and discuss how they fit with your everyday life, sport, any future family planning, and your desired recovery time. This results in a tailored concept that brings together medical requirements and your personal wishes.
Throughout the entire process, we keep you fully informed:
- about the options and their limits,
- about the risks, and
- about structured aftercare
- so you can make your decision with confidence.
Breast malformations can be treated
There are many forms of breast malformation - and just as many individually tailored solutions. Modern breast surgery allows for very natural, stable results when diagnosis, planning, and technique are precisely coordinated. If you'd like to make a change, we're happy to advise you - with the goal of achieving a breast shape that feels right for your body. Book your consultation now - we look forward to meeting you.
